Merrimack College Men's Basketball Newsletter - May 10, 2011

Die Lions sind auch in den USA Gesprächsthema. Den Newsletter von Darren Duncan's Universität möchten wir euch nicht vorenthalten:

Darren Duncan takes the Dornbirn Lions to the Austria Division II championship; Former Warrior standout sinks winning 3-pointer in semifinal win; named tourney MVP

"There was no doubt in my mind that as soon as he established himself in Austria, he would make an impact over there - both as a player and as a person," Merrimack head coach Bert Hammel. "I was always confident that he would do well in Austria."

Darren Duncan's 51 points in the Austria final four earned him the tourney
MVP award. He led Dornbirn to a 24-1 overall record and the league title.

Darren's finest moment at the final four:

Darren Duncan scored 12 of his 26 points in the final two minutes of last Saturday's semifinal win over Mistelbach.

Did you know that:

Dornbirn is three-time defending Austria West Division II champion.

The Dornbirn Lions have made three straight final four appearances; finishing third in 2009, fourth in 2010 and first in 2011.

How is this for a rookie season!!!

Darren Duncan completed his first year of international play by leading the Dornbirn Lions to the Austria Division II title - and he did so in dramatic fashion as he knocked down the game-winning three-pointer in the semifinals and then helped his team cruise in the title game.

"Playing in this final four was exciting," said Duncan who returned to his New York home today to spend some time with his family. "As a competitor you like to play against the best competition there is to offer and these final four match-ups gave me and my teammates the opportunity to take on a different challenge. And we welcomed it with open arms."

Semifinals:  Dornbirn 75, Mistelbach 69, Duncan's triple wins semifinal meeting wtih Mistelbach

This year, Austrian basketball fans got a view of the Darren Duncan dramatics that we became accustomed to during the 5-10 guard's four years at Merrimack College. And Saturday's semifinal win over Mistebach is a perfect example.

With 25 seconds left, Duncan drained a tie-breaking three-pointer to give Dornbirn the lead. Then, Mistebach turned the ball over into the hands of Duncan who sank two free throws (sounds familiar?) to give the Lions a comfortable five-point lead.

Dornbirn won 75-69 and advanced to the finals. "This was a tough, hard-fought match from the beginning," said Duncan, who finished with a game-high 26 points.

Finals: Dornbirn 85, Schwaz 60:  Duncan and the Lions reach the top of the league

Dornbirn met the host team - the Schwaz Silver Miners - and jumped out to an early lead that was triggered by an outstanding defensive effort.

"We pretty much never looked back from that early lead," said Duncan. "Schwaz made a couple of runs but the game was never in jeopardy."

Dornbirn won 85-60 behind a 25-point effort from Duncan. The win put the finishing touches on the most successful season in Dornbirn history (24-1).  After finishing in third and fourth place, respectively, during the last two years, Dornbirn finally reached the top.
